It’s fun, it’s thrifty, and it’s the perfect way to give second-hand materials a whole new life.

FAQ: Making a Jacket From a Blanket

  1. How much fabric or blanket do I need?
Your blanket or quilt needs to be at least:
  • Size 1: 164 cm × 121 cm
  • Size 2: 170 cm × 116 cm
  • Size 3: 178 cm × 122 cm
These measurements are the minimum required to cut all the pattern pieces. Quilts and blankets
come in all shapes, so choose the nicest areas for your bodice, sleeves, and pockets.

2. Can I use any blanket for this jacket?
Yes. Wool blankets, cotton quilts, woven throws, and most second-hand blankets will work. Thick blankets may be harder to sew; thin blankets may benefit from a lining. Avoid very stretchy or loose-weave blankets.

3. Is this pattern suitable for beginners?
The Boxy Jacket is labelled “Adventurous Beginner.” You only need basic sewing skills: straight seams, top-stitching, and simple binding. If you’re an absolute beginner, you can still make it – just take your time.

4. Do I need an overlocker (serger)?
No. An overlocker is optional. You can finish edges with a zigzag stitch or by using binding as instructed. An overlocker is helpful for thick fabrics but not required.
